The 16 Days Campaign, dedicated to ending violence against women, has been running globally since 1991.

It was adopted in Western Australia in 2017, led by the McGowan Government and its first dedicated Minister for Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence – the Hon Simone McGurk MLA.

At the heart of this campaign is the principle that women and girls in our State should be safe and free from violence, discrimination and harassment, but the sad reality is that the majority of victims of violence in WA are female.

The WA campaign starts on Friday 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and finishes on Saturday 10 December (Human Rights Day). It’s about promoting change in the community, in businesses and in workplaces to end violence against women by building a culture of safety and respect.

To help raise awareness, a selection of our State’s most prominent landmarks will be lit up in orange – the global campaign colour to promote an end to gender-based violence.

Each year, 16 Days in WA gives us the opportunity to learn more about family, domestic and sexual violence. It’s a time for all of us to demonstrate our commitment to being part of the change to end violence against women.
