New research has found liquor restrictions aimed at preventing alcohol harms do not negatively affect tourism.
The research, led by Curtin University’s National Drug Research Institute, found domestic traveller visits to major WA tourism regions, the Kimberley and Goldfields, soared after new liquor laws to reduce alcohol harms were introduced.
Negative tourist perceptions of alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour can strongly influence travel plans, reduce the likelihood of return visits and discourage positive recommendations to others.
These key findings are welcome news for regional communities, with benefits to both the economy and health outcomes.
