Mental Health Commission
The Mental Health Commission (Commission) will transition to the National Safety and Quality Mental Health Standards for Community Managed Organisations (CMO Standards), marking a significant shift in accreditation requirements for non-government mental health service providers across Western Australia.
The CMO Standards were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care to improve the safety and quality of mental health services delivered by community-managed organisations. These standards provide assurance to consumers, families, and carers, and offer best practice guidance for service providers.
The three core standards—Practice Governance, Partnering with Consumers, Families and Carers, and Model of Care—outline 82 actions that describe the expected level of care and safeguards.
Following extensive consultation with the sector, the Commission has set 1 July 2027 as the formal transition date. This change affects all non-government organisations funded by the Commission for mental health services or with a requirement to be accredited under the National Standards for Mental Health Services (2010).
Organisations with accreditation due on or before 30 June 2027 may choose to be assessed against either the NSMHS or the new CMO Standards. However, those with accreditation due on or after 1 July 2027 will be required to adopt the CMO Standards.
