Mental Health Commission

Hospital Services

There is a range of public inpatient hospital services provided by the State Government to support, treat and care for people with mental health, alcohol and other drug issues. These services include child, youth, adult and older adult mental health units, mother and baby mental health units, eating disorder services, and inpatient mental health services for people in prison.

To access inpatient services, you will generally need a referral from a community mental health, alcohol and other drug service, or emergency department.

Additionally, in some emergency departments, there may be Safe Haven Cafes and Mental Health Observation Areas or units for people in mental health distress. These services aim to divert people in crisis from attending emergency departments.

To find inpatient mental health services, search in the My Services online directory

There are also private inpatient mental health units in Western Australia.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven Cafes work alongside emergency departments after-hours, for people experiencing mental health issues. They offer peer-based support for those who may otherwise attend emergency departments, but do not need intensive clinical and medical support.

Two Safe Haven Cafes opened in early 2021 – one in Perth and the other in Kununurra. These services can be found at:

  • Royal Perth Hospital - Dabakan Ngowoort Koorliny Mia - managed by the East Metropolitan Health Service. Open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3pm to 7:45pm and located in Victoria Square, opposite St Mary's Cathedral. Look for the Safe Haven sign and press the intercom on the door to enter.
