New nitrous oxide laws to help reduce health harm

Published on 25 Mar 2024

The State Government will amend the Medicines and Poisons Regulations 2016, to strictly limit access to nitrous oxide to help reduce the associated health harm that comes with misuse.

The misuse of nitrous oxide gas cannisters has been associated with significant harm, including permanent brain and spinal cord damage.

The changes will not impact access to nitrous oxide for businesses in the automotive industry, or when used in a medical setting, which is already heavily regulated under WA law.
