What we mean by Lived Experience of Suicide (Definition)

A lived experience of suicide is having experienced suicidal thoughts, survived a suicide attempt, supported a loved one through suicidal crisis, or been bereaved by suicide. (Adopted by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and World Health Organisation)

More information about understanding a Lived Experience of suicide can be found at Roses in the Ocean.

Context

Evaluation of services funded under Suicide Prevention 2025 is important to help ensure communities are supported, and services offer value for money. The evaluation of Suicide Prevention 2025 aims to:

  • assess the effectiveness and appropriateness of Suicide Prevention 2025;
  • contribute to an evidence base for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention activities; and
  • provide recommendations for the future direction of suicide prevention in Western Australia.

Purpose of the ERG

To provide expert advice and support to the Mental Health Commission for the evaluation of Suicide Prevention 2025.

The ERG meets monthly for two hours, in person and/or online. The ERG has commenced with a completion target of June 2024 and the possibility of an extension to the work.

The Lived Experience ERG member will participate alongside another Lived Experience (consumer) member who brings a personal perspective of suicide, Mental Health Commission representatives and individuals considered experts in the field.

Payment

Lived Experience ERG members will be remunerated in line with the Commission’s Paid Participation Policy.  The rate is the advisor tier at $75/hr, for a minimum of 3 hours.

In addition to the ERG meetings, paid participation will be offered for time taken to prepare for the meetings and for Lived Experience members to effectively undertake the role. This may include but is not limited to reviewing papers, providing feedback, briefing and debriefing with MHC staff and/or Lived Experience peers.

It is estimated paid participation will amount to 6-10 hours per month.

Expressions of interest will close at 5pm on Monday 25 September 2023.  Submit your expression of interest online.

We encourage you to contact Rosie Barnes by phone on (08) 6553 0237 or via email at suicideprevention@mhc.wa.gov.au to gain further understanding of the requirements for the role, work of the ERG and who the other members are before submitting an Expression of Interest. The ERG Terms of Reference can be made available on request.
