Beds opened in Rockingham
Older people in Rockingham now have more access to local mental health inpatient beds with four beds opening at Rockingham General Hospital this week. These additional places take the older adult bed capacity at Rockingham General Hospital to 10 beds.
The Mental Health Commission provided the South Metropolitan Health Service with additional funds to open these beds to respond to increased demand for older adult hospital beds within the Peel and Rockingham/Kwinana region.
It brings older adult acute bed based services in the region in line with the optimal level outlined in the Western Australian Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Services Plan 2015-2025.
They complement other mental health services in Rockingham tailored for older people including the specialist outpatient program for older adults, and specialist day therapy and therapeutic groups.
There are also many other mental health services in the area including:
- the Rockingham community mental health step up step down service;
- psychosocial group support and activities in Rockingham and Mandurah.
- Community based counselling services and peer support programs;
- the Peel Community Mental Health Service (adults and older adults);
- Maternity and Perinatal Special Support Programs;
- Youth Specialist Support programs;
- ten beds for supported accommodation in Rockingham, Mandurah and Waikiki;
- Six crisis respite beds in Medina; and
- Personal support and tenancy assistance to people in 25 houses.
