Making a difference - what our team say about working at Next Step

"I came to work at Next Step years ago, almost by accident, with no intention of staying beyond my six-month term, hoping to learn a few skills in a field I often felt ill-equipped to manage. Yet, I never left. I quickly learnt to work with some of the most neglected, disadvantaged, and misunderstood people in our community, hoping to make a difference. All the time feeling well supported by a great team. It’s been a rewarding and challenging experience at the same time, one I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’ve learnt so much, most of all about being a better human being."

Addiction Medicine Specialist, Next Step Drug and Alcohol Services

"I consider myself a staff member that has “stuck around” having worked at Next Step for 18 years and counting. I don’t stay because I am stuck, but I have repeatedly not taken up opportunities in what might seem more attractive workplaces than a public sector addiction service. Instead I feel like I am given what I need to make a difference with people that have significant need and are very grateful for the treatment they receive. I feel supported to work in a manner consistent with my values.  I also stay because of the team I get to work with and while the team members have changed over the years, the comradery, humour and support have made all the difference in the inevitable challenges that come up in working with mental health and addiction."
